Our History

The Brotherhood of United Firefighters (BUFF) was created by Black firefighters within the Camden Fire Department to support one another professionally, socially, and within the community.

The organization traces its roots to the late 1960s, during the civil rights era when African-American firefighters across the United States began forming organizations to advocate for equality, representation, and support within fire departments.

• Around 1969, Black firefighters in Camden formally incorporated the Brotherhood of United Fire Fighters.
• The organization became affiliated with the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters (IABPFF), a national network representing Black firefighters in major cities.

These organizations were created because many fire departments at the time:

• Were segregated or had discriminatory hiring practices
• Limited promotions for Black firefighters
• Had hostile or unequal working environments

BUFF helped advocate for fairness and representation within the Camden Fire Department.

Since its founding, B.U.F.F. has remained dedicated to supporting firefighters while strengthening relationships within the community. Over the decades, members have continued to serve with pride while helping create pathways for future generations of firefighters and community leaders.

Today, the organization stands as a symbol of dedication, service, and legacy within the Camden community.
